Im a Canon user and have been since 2010 when I bought my first DSLR. I did what I normally do when buying stuff and scoured Youtube reviews. I came across one by the naturalist and presenter Simon King. At the time he was using an EOS 40d together with a 100-400L lens which I subsequently bought and was delighted with it. Since then I have expanded my range of lenses and changed to a 5dMk3 and eventually to the 5dMk4. I love the build and image quality, the menu system and just the feel of the camera so I have no plans to change. That said I am a firm believer that brand is not important, it is about finding a system that works well for you.
Canon EOS 5d Mk4
I bought this camera body while I was doing Wedding photography. It is an excellent full frame all round camera that I love because it gives me the flexibility to switch from Wildlife to Landscape to Marco. Yes there are camera bodies that provide faster fps, better resolution and better dynamic range but for me, it is the perfect camera at the moment for my type of photography.
Canon EOS 7d Mk2
This is my most recent purchase. I had a 5d Mk3 which I part exed at the Photography show. This is a crop sensor body which effectively gives a 1.6 crop so a 400mm lens becomes a 640mm. It also delivers 10fps compared to the 6fps of the 5d. This means I have more chance of capturing the shots In want but it does come at a price. Because it doesn’t handle noise as well as the 5d, I try to limit the ISO to 800 or even better 640, however this means that in low light, the shutter speed is compromised.. Still a great camera and a great addition to my kit.
Canon 100-400L Vii
This is the latest version of this fantastic zoom lens, sharp and fast focussing and works well with a 1x4 extender although at f8, which does mean some light loss but it does mean that I potentially have a reach of 560mm.
Canon 24-70L Vii
This was my wedding workhorse lens and has taken thousands of excellent photo’s. It is now my landscape lens and general walkabout lens. Usual L series build and image quality.
Canon 100L Macro
I have owned this lens for a few years now and it is perfect for insects and small creatures which I love to photograph. This allows me to focus really close and get some really detailed images.
I bought this lens a while ago with the express intention of doing some night photography. It is a manual focus and will stop down to f2.8. At 14mm it has had great reviews as a night sky lens. I haven’t done enough with this lens but I aim to change that.
After some trials with the Iphone I realised that the audio was not good, especially outdoors so I bought this microphone and fitted it to the Smooth q gimbal
Zhiyuin Smooth Q
I use this with my Iphone 8 to capture video for my Youtube channel.
Akaso Brave 4
I wanted something smaller and more portable to record my vlogs. As the GoPro was a bit out of my price range, I found this and I have to say that for the money, so far it has been excellent. It comes with a waterproof case, a multitude of attachments, shoots in 4k and has several settings such as slo mo and time lapse. I recorded my most recent vlog with it in 1080 HD and I have to say I was impressed with the quality. .
